TROVE Audio: Kate Eagle, Director, Aedas Presents

Here I am in conversation with Director or TROVE Charlie Levine, discussing the success of Aedas Presents and the inception of the hugely anticipated Thrift Radiates Happiness.

http://trove.org.uk/trove-audio/

There is clearly a demand for more Arts & Architecture Events in our City

As ‘Aedas Presents’ celebrates a successful 18 month term, (including an Arts & Business Cultural Champion Award!) I wanted to examine the impact that this region-wide arts and business initiative has had on local emerging artists and look at what the future holds for this programme that has gained significant momentum in the city within a very short space of time.

‘Aedas Presents’ has enabled the work of more than 30 artists from West Midlands’ universities and colleges to be showcased to over 2000 of Birmingham’s business and arts community at its Colmore Plaza home.

Aedas Presents is the brainchild of myself as Marketing Coordinator at global architectural practice Aedas and independent curator Charlie Levine.  Key supporters include the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design at University College Birmingham, the Birmingham Library and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

It was founded to support and showcase the work of emerging artists, students and graduates from local universities and colleges and to help them get on the first rung on the career ladder.  Aedas is a progressive practice dedicated to design excellence, sustainability and providing solutions for the built environment that benefit communities from around the world.

This ethos remains very much the way forward for the built environment and Aedas wanted to help invest in its future.  One way of doing this was to find a way to engage with young up and coming talented designers and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their work.  Helping them to climb that first rung of the design ladder will enable them to be seen and heard in what is a highly competitive work environment.

At the time of the idea’s inception we had recently moved into our new regional office home, Colmore Plaza.  With floor to ceiling glazing and an active frontage to the building this huge atrium was simply ideal to hold the types of showcase events we had in mind.

There is clearly a demand for this type of city centre showcase venue as we have already received an overwhelming expression of interest from a number of art quarters which means that we have showcased exhibitions beyond our initial one year goal.  It’s a great achievement and we look forward to continuing the Aedas Presents brand – in this hugely anticipated event, Thrift Radiates Happiness.

Frame Birmingham is an Arts Council funded, mac birmingham supported project by Elly Clarke / Clarke Gallery that sees unique and very small edition artworks by local and international artists installed into a variety of businesses across the city as a means of bringing art to new audiences, new audiences to art and new contexts in which art can be shown. It is also about provoking and stimulating conversations about and around the artworks, by a variety of people in a variety of different places.

Scheduled to launch on 16th November 2012, the frames will remain in place for three months, with work changing only when sold. This website will act as the mirror to show what is on display in the city. All work is also for sale, up to a maximum price of £750. Thanks to the partnership with mac birmingham, all work will be available to purchase with an interest free loan via the Own Art scheme.

Aedas Presents Bharti Parmar - The Breakfast Talk

To accompany Bharti Parmar's site-specific work for the Aedas Studio, "Shag": a shagpile carpet made from human hair, Aedas Presents held an exclusive invitation only breakfast talk last week.

Following a short informal presentation of the background of "Shag" by the artist, we held a conversation on the social and cultural issues that this work raises.  A total of 17 attendees joined us at this event from various disciplines ranging from theatre, anthropology, science and architecture.

Bharti also showed us a video of part of her inspiration - Zoran Todorovic,‘Warmth’.  Large quantities of industrial type sheets-blankets, produced from human hair leaving the ‘imprint of hundreds of Serbian people’.

The event proved to be an interesting, insightful and enjoyable start to the day.

Key themes included:

·         Hair – structural/sculptural quality
·         Memory stimulated through love tokens – mourning jewellery (18th/19th century), sentimentality.
·         Paradox of hair, it is dead yet conjures up images of a living person.
·         Hair- self/identity
·         Site-specific, challenge of exhibiting within an office environment.
·         ‘Shag’, a substitution- green rug/hair rug. Derived from surrealist movement.
·         Disgust and desire.
·         Cool corporate environment, disrupt the space with slightly ‘taboo’ elements.
·         The process/origins of the hair (European expensive, most asian hair cheaper)

The show will remain at Colmore Plaza until the end of May.  To arrange a visit please email: aedaspresents@aedas.com.

'SHAG' in it's new home - The Aedas Studio

The tools of Bharti's craft

Bharti Parmar made a piece work about substitution for Aedas Presents.  By making an intervention within the space and fabric of the studio, she has substitute a green designer shagpile carpet to make us think again of what we see.

SHAG is a human hair sculpture.  The hair has been sourced from wigmakers’ suppliers and originates from Europe and China.  Additionally, hair donated by staff at Aedas has been incorporated into the carpet.  SHAG contains over £700 worth of hair.

SHAG is an important artwork and in placing it within a minimal corporate space it brings to mind notions of discomfiture, taboo, fetish and matter out of place.  The accompanying video provides insight into the artist’s process of making the carpet.

See a copy of the video here:

The show will remain at Colmore Plaza until Friday 1st June.  To arrange a visit please email

Arts & Business Cultural Champion Awards

Thursday was the Arts and Business Cultural Champions Award Ceremony where Aedas Presents had been nominated to receive this prestigious award.

Aedas Presents, a project which is only 18 months old, nominated Marcus Wilkins to receive this award as have found his tireless support to be truly inspirational.  The awards ceremony was a night of celebration and spectacle, held at Jaguar Cars’ prestigious visitor centre in Castle Bromwich.

We attended the event with Charlie Levine and Neville Topping, Director of Elias Topping and gentleman behind the success of TROVE.  Neville gave Charlie the keys to the Engine Room of the Old Science and Industry Museum, which has been Troves home for almost 2 and a half years.
